CaixaForum Madrid is a 21st century sociocultural centre which opens its doors to ancient, modern and contemporary art, music and poetry festivals, multimedia art, debates on current affairs, social conferences and family and educational workshops.
Its spectacular premises, in Paseo del Prado, near the three major museums of the Art Walk, the Prado, the Thyssen and the Reina Sofía, are one of the new icons of our city. The renovation of the building that housed the old Mediodía electric power station was carried out by the Herzog & De Meuron architectural studio and it has two characteristics that make it easily recognisable: its vertical garden and its apparent state of “levitation”.
CaixaForum has more than 2,000 m2 for use as exhibition halls, an auditorium with 322 seats, a media library, several multiple-use rooms for lectures and other activities, conservation and restoration workshops, and a store-room for works of art. An ample lobby, a cafeteria, a shop-bookshop and a restaurant are also available for visitors.
The CaixaForum square, with its impressive architectonical design, boasts a pond and a green, fresh, extraordinary wall forming a vertical garden which takes up the entire wall of a side building.
Based on his own theory that “plants do not need soil; they just need water, minerals, light, and carbon dioxide,” Patrick Blanc built an impressive 78 -foot tall green wall with 250 different species of plants that survive without soil and which give the appearance of a living piece of art.
